How to Make a
New Year's Resolution

But the noble make noble plans, and by noble deeds they stand.  Isaiah 32:8 TNIV

Every January 1st brings New Year's Resolutions filled with hope toward a better lifestyle and conquering bad habits.  But usually by January 31st, those resolutions are already forgotten and put aside, without any sign of making progress. The problem is that too often we say we want to change, but never intentionally take the steps needed to change. The solution is to plan the process of change, before actually beginning. Here are the steps you will need to take in order to successfully accomplish your new year’s resolution:

1.       Make a list of everything you would like to accomplish this year.  What have you been telling yourself you need to do in order to bring about a healthier, spiritually balanced lifestyle?  Write down everything that comes to mind, and be specific.  For instance, if you want to be at a healthier size, write down a specific goal, such as an ideal weight you would like to reach.

2.       Looking over your list, number the list in order of importance.  What would make the biggest impact in your life and honor God?  “Noble deeds” as mentioned in the Scripture above comes from the Hebrew word that means “free movement of the will unto divine service or sacrifice”  (TWOT, 1299b).  This means you are choosing to break a bad habit, and/or incorporate a good habit that will be of divine service and glorify the Almighty God!  Rank the “noble” item as number one. Then rank the other items accordingly.

3.       Considering the number one item that will make the biggest impact on your life, ask yourself why you want to make this change.  Write down all the advantages and disadvantages of making this change.

4.       For item number one, write down all the steps that will be necessary to make this change in your life. Think through logical and reasonable steps to accomplish this goal.  If you are planning to lose weight, don’t consider an excessive jump to eating only carrots and celery for the next three months.  You’ll find yourself failing with such extreme measures.  Take small steps toward making this change and getting to the finish line.

5.       Set dates to achieve these steps.  Again, be reasonable, considering your lifestyle.  If you don’t achieve a step by the specified date, then adjust your timeline for achieving the goal.

6.       Set rewards for yourself for each step accomplished.  Is there something you really want to do, but never have the time?  Consider rewarding yourself with that wish when you achieve your goal.

7.       Find an accountability partner.  Tell a trusted friend your plan, and give her the dates and steps you have written down.  Then give her permission to ask you each week if you have taken those steps.  Ask her to encourage you along the way, then offer to help her in the same way achieve her new year’s resolution.

8.       Don’t attempt to start on any other resolutions until you have achieved this first goal.  Working on them one at a time will help you progress throughout the year toward a life that is full of self-discipline and the confidence that it brings!
